Summary: In 2020-2021, I researched methods for cultivating more effective learning retention in virtual learning environments, with specific interest in video and other digital media consumption. My findings led to multiple case studies as educators transitioned to primarily virtual environments in light of the global COVID pandemic, but the fundamental concepts of Mayer's Rich Media Principles and van Merriënboer & Sweller's Cognitive Load Theory have informed educators and trainers on the best practices long before we needed to inhabit the virtual learning spaces so frequently.
